Huddersfield Giants coach Paul Anderson is hoping his players have got enough rustiness out of their system to open their 2014 Super League campaign with a win at Wigan Warriors on Friday night.

Anderson’s 2013 table-toppers head to the reigning Super League champions after securing a hard-fought 20-18 home trial triumph over Hull KR on Saturday.

Due to the previous postponement at Wakefield, this was the Giants’ only warm-up game for the season. Two tries from Leroy Cudjoe and one each for Jermaine McGillvary and Scott Grix put them in good heart for the big kick-off.

“We looked rusty on Saturday. That was the game I was looking for at Wakefield the week before,” said Anderson.

“You could tell straight away Hull KR had played the week before, because they had more game sense and game intent than us. Their rustiness had gone, so we hope we won’t be showing any rustiness on Friday night.

“We’ve just got to get on with it and see what Friday brings. We’ve got the honour of being involved in the first game of the new season and we’ll go there and look forward to that. We won’t be going there making any excuses.”
