With Joe Wardle having escaped suspension, do you envisage making many changes this weekend?

It’ll be very much the same as it was against Hull KR, because those players who were part of us throwing away that lead will be determined to put things right.

We obviously did have to consider the possibility of not having Joe, with Aaron Murphy switching to centre and Jodie Broughton coming in to make his debut for us on the wing.

But we now don’t need to think like that, which is clearly good news for Joe and disappointing news for Jodie.

As you can imagine, Jodie’s desperate to play after missing out in the first two games, but he knows what the situation is and his attitude to all this has been first class.

At the start of the season, I explained to him how I would be staying loyal to Murph in the opening rounds.

Jodie immediately accepted that and, in fact, said to me that if he’d been Murph and someone else had come in and taken his spot, he’d be far from happy.

He saw how good Murph had been for us last season, so he fully understood where I was coming from. That proves what a top bloke he is.

But Jodie also knows he’ll be getting a game in the next few weeks and, when he does, it’s up to him to make sure he stays there.

Going back to the Joe Wardle situation, were you surprised he wasn’t banned?

Not when you see the incident in its entirety.

He was simply responding to what was extreme provocation, and that was something the disciplinary panel very quickly appreciated.

Joe initially went in to the first-half brawl as a peacekeeper to keep players apart.

But as soon as he stepped in, he received a left hand and then a left arm in the neck, so what are you expected to do under such extreme provocation?

Did the charge against him sum up much of the frustration that was felt as a result of the thrown-away point against Hull KR?

In a way, yes.

As I said straight after the game, it was very scrappy, with everyone out there on the field having a part to play in that process. They all shared responsibility.

But that doesn’t excuse the way we played on the day. We ended up getting what we deserved out of the match.

I suppose we could easily have ended up winning the game – I’m sure we would have done that had Brett Ferres’ perfectly good try in the second half not been ruled out for offside, for example – but that would only have papered over some pretty nasty cracks.

So, in a sense, the fact Hull KR came back and took a point off us could have given us the sort of kick up the backside that was required, because we certainly never went into the game with the right attitude.

You’d like to think there will be no repeat in future games.

It definitely made for what was an ‘interesting’ review on Monday morning when there were a few home truths.

Some players ended the session feeling embarrassed, while other people earned some praise.

I’m sure those who were embarrassed weren’t too happy about it, but it’s up to them to make sure it’s something they don’t feel again.

That’ll be avoided if they get back to rolling their sleeves up and being prepared to work hard for each other.

That was the key to our success last season, and that will be the key to our success again in 2014.

That’s something that’s in our own hands.

The big rugby league news story this week has obviously been the docking of six points for your former club Bradford Bulls and the fact they’ve gone back into administration. What are your feelings on that?

It’s obviously sad.

But, at the end of the day, what happens at Bradford has nothing to do with me.

I just hope the staff get paid and that the situation gets sorted out as quickly as it possibly can.

And I’m afraid that’s the answer I’ll give anyone.

As I always say with things that take place at other clubs, it’s all completely out of my control, so I’m not really in a position to say too much about it.

And, of course, what I also say is that my sole focus is on the things I can control – and that’s trying to make Huddersfield Giants as competitive as they can possibly be.

That’s again the case this week as we prepare to travel to Widnes tomorrow.

I’ve watched them on video three times, but the key as always is making sure we give ourselves the best possible chance of picking up the win.

To do that we have to make sure our own preparation is spot-on, because that’s something that’s within our control.

We know we’re a good team, but we know we can get a lot better.

And we’ll do that if we focus 100% on our own game, regardless of who we’re up against, because we know it’s all about us.
