Huddersfield Giants coach Paul Anderson has hailed the effort produced by his players to secure their morale-boosting 31-22 triumph over reigning Super League champions Wigan Warriors.

It was just the response the Huddersfield chief had hoped to see following last Friday’s 41-22 capitulation at St Helens.

Despite fielding a much-changed pack – with Jason Chan, Craig Kopczak and Anthony Mullally axed from last week’s side – and falling 12-0 behind early on, Anderson’s men were full value for their triumph.

And the Giants chief is hoping it’s a sign of things to come.

“What we served up last night was everything we didn’t at Saints last week,” said Anderson, who revealed winger Aaron Murphy wanted to go back on the field in the second half despite suffering a sickening head knock just before the break.

“We know it was far from a perfect performance. We didn’t throw a great deal of rugby at them and shape at them and we conceded 22 points, some of them soft ones.

“Instead, this was a win based on effort, and I’m happy about that.

“There were a lot of things that I was happy about last night, but what makes me the happiest is the win.”

While the Giants now face a break because they are out of the Challenge Cup competition, they can prepare very positively for their next Super League outing, which is against the Leeds Rhinos over at Headingley on Thursday, June 12.
