Paul Anderson could field several members of the senior Huddersfield Giants squad when they visit Wakefield Trinity Wildcats for what’s expected to be a predominantly Under 19s warm-up clash at Sandal RUFC next Friday (January 30, 1.30pm).

But the number of Super League squad men could increase if the Huddersfield chief’s plan to fix up a midweek first-team trial clash next week fails to bear fruit.

With Sunday’s clash at Bradford Bulls having been called off due to a frozen pitch, the Giants are facing the prospect of going into their opening Super League XX clash at home to Hull FC on Sunday, February 8, with just the one pre-season game at Halifax this Sunday under their belt.

And while Anderson admitted losing one trial game at Bradford isn’t the end of the world, he knows he can’t afford a similar scenario this weekend.

“We’re always keen to play, but after losing the Bradford game it’s vital this one goes ahead at Halifax.” said Anderson.

“I’m also still pretty keen to arrange a midweek game next week if at all possible, although there’s no guarantee that’ll happen.

“We have got the trial fixed up at Wakefield next Friday when there will be a mixture of players, and I’ve spoken to (Wildcats boss) James Webster a couple of times about what the potential make-up of the teams will be.

“But at this stage there’s still a fair amount of planning to be done before everything is finalised and exactly what we’ll do between now and round one against Hull.”
