Huddersfield Giants will face a rejuvenated Wakefield Trinity Wildcats with both clubs needing points in the shake up for the play-offs.

While Giants head coach Paul Anderson and his troops travel to Belle Vue looking for points to propel them into the top four places, Wildcats coach James Webster’s side are looking at a win or bust situation as they probably need four wins from their final five games to have a chance of scraping a place in the top eight.

However, a recent victory over old rivals Leeds Rhinos and then a stunning 40-26 win at Warrington Wolves in the last round of Super League matches has given the Wildcats momentum going into the final throes of the league campaign.

And the hero of the Warrington win Chris Riley, who is on loan at Wakefield from the Halliwell Jones Stadium and bagged a hat trick against his own Wolves team, knows there is plenty of work still to be done.

“Like any winger I just wanted to get a try, so to get a hat trick was brilliant,” said Riley.

“It was a bit weird playing at Warrington, but to win was the main thing and that was one of our best displays this season.

“Now we have another big game against Huddersfield on Sunday, and we have got to try and keep putting on pressure for that eighth spot.”

The mood appears to be buoyant in the Wakefield camp and prop Nick Scruton believes home games hold the key – making the Giants clash crucial for Wakefield’s aspirations.

“We’ve got some pretty good home fixtures coming up, so obviously we are looking to win every game at home,” said the 29-year-old.

“It was important to bounce back after the Catalan defeat because everybody had written us off.

“Result-wise and performance-wise Warrington had a bit of everything for us and to get a win like we did was pretty special.

“So against Huddersfield we have to go in and put in a good performance, because to still be considered to be in the running for that top eight is pretty nice.”
