Huddersfield Giants need to re-discover the killer streak says Michael Lawrence

Michael Lawrence wants the Giants to be more ruthless

In-form Michael Lawrence believes the Huddersfield Giants are still lacking a killer streak.

And he knows they need to find it quickly if they are to mount a serious Super League title challenge.

The 24-year-old back-row forward produced a man-of-the-match performance as Huddersfield completed an Easter double with a comfortable 36-16 home win over Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

That came just four days after a far more impressive 42-22 triumph at star-studded Salford Red Devils.

But Lawrence knows a repeat of the flat second-half showing against the Wildcats won’t help the Giants’ cause in the bigger challenges waiting on the horizon.

“Getting two wins over Easter is great and has helped us get back in the mix,” said the former Newsome Panthers junior.

“But there was nothing to be pleased about with that flat second-half performance against Wakefield.

“It’s always tough playing two games in four games, and that could account for the lack of energy we showed.

“But that’s still no excuse. We really should be doing far better than that.

“As well as a lack of energy, we also showed a lack of desire at times.

“At the moment, we don’t seem to have that killer mentality which sides need if they want to be successful at this level.

“It’s vital we get that back as quickly as possible, because we’ve got some big games ahead.

“I’m sure that’s something we’ll be trying to address between now and our next game at home to Castleford a week on Sunday.

“They’ve had a fantastic start to the season and got that impressive win over Warrington on Monday (40-6), so we know how tough it’s going to be.

“We have to make sure we’re 100% ready for them.”

And England Knights ace Lawrence admits picking up the man-of-the-match award against the Wildcats has put an extra spring in his step.

“I’m happy with the role I play and like to think I do it well and help the team out,” said Lawrence, who regularly makes 40-plus tackles in a game to lead his side’s defensive duties.

“But it’s not very often it gets recognised by a man-of-the-match award, so I’m more than happy to take it.

“Having said that, at the end of the day, as long as I’m contributing and helping the team win, that’ll do for me.”
