FIT-AGAIN Keith Mason is desperate to prove he’s getting back to his Huddersfield Giants best at Catalan Dragons tonight.

A pre-season groin injury and then damage to a knee which required minor surgery has kept Mason on the sidelines for much of the Super League XVII campaign.

The rugged prop has also had to deal with the death of close friend Corporal Jake Hartley, who was one of six soldiers tragically killed in Afghanistan on March 6.

But Mason is now feeling much better, both mentally and physically, and is determined to put the past few months behind him and make a major Giants impact in the months ahead.

“I’m finally injury-free again and looking forward to the rest of the season,” said Mason.

“I’ve been happy with the run-outs I’ve had over the past month and I do feel I’m getting back into some kind of form.

“I’ve also had to deal with the loss of my mate Jake, which was tough, and I feel I’ve now dealt with that as well and can move on.

“The key now is to get more game-time under my belt and build up my match fitness, which I hope I’ll be able to do against Catalan today.

“It’s going to be another big, physical battle, but that’s the sort of contest I enjoy. I’d love to play even better and help us get the win that will keep us at the top of the table.”

But Mason also knows he’s going to need to play well to keep hold of a Super League spot.

“Everybody has to play well week in, week out to keep a spot. If not, they’re out,” he added.

“But I believe in myself and my ability, and I know if I’m playing good footy I’ll keep my place in the team.”

Giants prop forward Adam Walker (21) is set to make his debut for Swinton at home to York City Knights tomorrow on a dual registration.
