England try scorer Brett Ferres has hailed his flourishing left-sided partnership with Giants teammate Leroy Cudjoe.

Back-row forward Ferres and centre Cudjoe combined to terrorise the Ireland defence during England’s 42-0 World Cup triumph at their John Smith’s Stadium ‘home’.

The pair proved too hot to handle as they put winger Ryan Hall over for a hat-trick in just 21 minutes, while Ferres then crossed for his first England try in the 23rd minute to give his country a 30-0 lead.

That was the icing on the cake as England opened their World Cup account after last week’s 28-20 defeat to Australia in front of a stadium record 24,375 crowd.

And Ferres is hoping the way he worked so successfully with Cudjoe means they will retain their places throughout the competition – and maybe continue the partnership for the Giants in 2014.

“I think it’s working well with Leroy and me,” said Ferres. “It was a bit strange at first seeing Leroy at my side, because it’s usually Joe Wardle next to me and Leroy over the other side, but it seems to be working well for us (England) at the moment, and long may that continue.

“Even though we usually play on different sides of the field, the fact we play for the same club has made it a bit easier for us to link up. After all, we do train together on a daily basis.

“In the short term, I hope we get the nod to carry on this combination against Fiji on Saturday, because the more games we play together, the more effective we’ll be – and that could be so important for the matches later in the competition.”
