Brett Ferres is delighted to have retained his place in England’s side to face Australia in the Four Nations – even if it is from the bench.

The Giants vice-captain has been named in an unchanged line-up for Sunday’s clash in Melbourne, when victory for England would book them a place in the final and condemn the Kangaroos to an early and embarrassing exit from a tournament on home soil.

The 28-year-old back-row forward played off the bench in the 32-26 weekend win over Samoa in Brisbane, while the Aussies went down 30-12 to New Zealand.

But even though the time Ferres had on the field was limited and his influence restricted, he’s more than happy to play a similar role for England boss and former Giants captain Steve McNamara this weekend – particularly as it’s against the old enemy.

“It’s always special playing for your country against the Australians. It’s the pinnacle of your career,” said Ferres.

“It was an unbelievable experience facing them in the World Cup opener last year, and I know it’s going to be just as special facing Australia in Australia.

“Obviously, I’m used to starting games, but Steve thinks I can add something different from the bench, so I’m happy to do what’s best for the team.

“It’s always going to be a tough call for the coach when selecting an England side because most players are regular starters at club level.

“But Steve’s in charge and, though it can’t be easy, he picks the side he thinks can do the job.

“The 17 which faces Australia is the same 17 that beat what was a really impressive Samoa side, so we’ll be heading into this wekend’s with confidence and with a win under our belts.

“As a result, we can’t wait to get out there, particularly when we know how significant a win for us would be.”
