Eorl Crabtree is looking forward to making Super rather than Premier League the hot topic of conversation around St James’ Park.

Seven days after Newcastle United ensured top-flight status with a 2-0 home win over West Ham United there, St James’ Park will host Huddersfield Giants.

They take on Catalans Dragons in the fourth of six Magic Weekend matches on Sunday (1.00) and long-serving Crabtree is looking forward to strutting his stuff at the famous stadium.

The England international prop, whose try sealed victory over Castleford Tigers last time out, said: “I was absolutely buzzing when I heard about playing at St James’ Park.

“As a professional athlete, you want to play at the best stadiums and in front of the best crowds, and Newcastle ticks both boxes.

“I have had some great nights in Newcastle and been around the vicinity of the ground without actually making it inside, so it will be great to put that right and get out there on that field.

“For the fans, it is a massive party weekend, and with the stadium being right in the city centre and close to the bars and restaurants, it’s a great venue.”

With locals snapping up tickets, it’s also a chance for rugby league expansion and Crabtree added: “I think the Geordies will love it.

“They have an opportunity to watch one of the best sports in the world in their own back yard, with big impacts, lots of skill and high-paced scoring.

“The tickets are being put out there at a great price for people to come and get involved, and it is a massive chance for Newcastle folk to be introduced to something new.”

Crabtree is one of only seven players to have featured in all eight previous Magic Weekends at Cardiff, Edinburgh and Manchester.

The others are former Giants player Kevin Brown (Widnes Vikings), Andy Lynch (Castleford Tigers), Darrell Goulding (Hull Kingston Rovers), Leeds Rhinos duo Ryan Hall and Kevin Sinfield and Ryan Atkins (Warrington Wolves).
