HUDDERSFIELD Giants star Darrell Griffin will have an unusual supporter during England’s Gillette Four Nations campaign ... prime minister David Cameron.

The 29-year-old prop forward was last week called up to the 24-man national squad for the trip to Australia and New Zealand, alongside Giants team-mates Kevin Brown, Eorl Crabtree, Leroy Cudjoe, Shaun Lunt and Luke Robinson.

Darrell hails from the Oxfordshire town of Witney, which is represented by the prime minister, and he began his rugby league career with Oxford Cavaliers.

And Mr Cameron has expressed his delight that someone originally from his constituency will play for England in the tournament against Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea this autumn.

He said: “I congratulate Darrell Griffin from Witney, who plays for Huddersfield Giants, on his selection for the England Rugby League squad to take part in the forthcoming Four Nations tournament in Australia and New Zealand.

“And I wish Darrell and the team good luck in the competition.”

The Tory leader was initially informed of Darrell’s selection by former Oxford Cavaliers chairman Lionel Hurst.

Darrell began his professional career at London Broncos before moving to Wakefield and then joining the Giants in 2007.

He made his England Test debut against Wales two years ago and, like the rest of his Giants teammates, will be making his first full senior international tour.
