LEE GILMOUR is hoping his days at prop could be numbered.

The former Great Britain centre or back-row forward has started the season for the Giants in the front row in the wake of the club’s prop crisis.

The 33-year-old could again pack down at prop in tonight’s big Super League XVII clash at champions Leeds Rhinos.

But with David Fa’alogo having just returned following major back surgery, fellow former Test forward Luke O’Donnell ready to return after a knee reconstruction and Keith Mason having made as full recovery from a niggly knee injury, Gilmour is keen to get back to more familiar territory.

“I have enjoyed the experience of playing front row, which is something I never thought I’d say!” said Gilmour, who will return to action at Leeds tonight after being rested for last weekend’s 40-22 defeat at Hull KR, when the Giants missed the chance to go back to the top of the Super League table.

“Having said that, I certainly wouldn’t be too upset to be told my services weren’t required at prop any more.

“With David Fa’alogo back and Luke O’Donnell and Keith Mason fit again, this could be my chance to slide back into the second row.

“That’s obviously a coaches’ call, and I’m also aware we’re not lacking in quality back-row forwards anyway, but I’d like to think it’s my time has come.

“But, at the end of the day, I’ll do whatever’s best for the team.

“That’s why I’ve been more than willing to play at prop at the start of this season, and if the coaches want me to carry on playing there I will.

“I just want to do my best to help give the Giants the best chance of winning something this season, which I know we can.”

Gilmour missed his first game of the season against Rovers on Sunday, and he is confident the rest will do him a power of good.

“Like any player, I never like to miss games,” he added.

“But after playing seven games on the bounce – particularly at prop – I know how much I’ll benefit from the time off. I had a couple of niggles, and I’m very hopeful they’ve gone now.

“And with a short turn-around between Hull KR and Leeds and then Easter a week later, it’s obviously going to be a tough time of the season physically, so the key is to keep the squad as fresh as possible.

“All being well, not playing last weekend will mean I can make more of a contribution in the next few games.

“I certainly feel good and looking forward to getting back out there.”
