Proud Scott Grix has expressed his delight at becoming a Super League record-breaker – and helping the Huddersfield Giants climb to fourth in the top-flight table in the process.

The experienced full-back crossed for a hat trick of tries in the first 8 minutes 51 seconds of yesterday’s 44-14 victory at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

It’s the quickest hat trick ever recorded by a player at the start of a Super League fixture, although it’s only the second fastest scored in the professional game.

That came from Giants assistant coach Chris Thorman, who crossed for three tries in the first 6mins 54secs of Huddersfield’s Buddies Cup triumph at Doncaster in 2002.

But Grix admits that’s not taken any of the gloss off his achievement, with the scores helping his side make it three Super League wins on the trot.

“I’m over the moon to score any try, so you can gather how proud I feel to score a hat trick in record time at the start of a Super League game,” said Grix, whose last treble came when he was playing for Wakefield against Castleford at the Magic Weekend at the Millennium Stadium in 2008.

“But what makes it even more important is that it helped us win the game.

“Once again, we put in a pretty scrappy display, which is really frustrating, because we’d had a quality build-up to the game.

“So it was important we started so well and then finished so well. In between wasn’t so good, and we need to have a look at that.

“Obviously, I didn’t know at the time how significant my early tries would be, although I was aware I’d done something pretty special tryscoring-wise.

“To be honest, breaking a record wasn’t on my mind when I scored my second try. It was only when Chris Thorman came on and told me not to score again very quickly because I could break his record that I thought about the possibility!

“I’m sure he was happy I didn’t beat his record, and I’m still delighted to have created the Super League record. It’s a good feeling.”
