Joe Wardle has accepted the Giants still have a lot of work to do to convince everyone they’re genuine Super League Grand Final contenders.

Huddersfield head into tomorrow’s home clash against Warrington Wolves having virtually secured their play-off semi-final spot, thanks to St Helens’ 42-38 triumph at Castleford Tigers on Thursday night.

A win over the Wolves would take the Giants back above Saints into third spot in the Super League table with two Super 8s fixture remaining.

But Wardle knows a big improvement is required to guarantee a win over Warrington and then future success in the competition as the countdown to the Old Trafford Grand Final on Saturday, October 10 gets under way.

“It’s great our hard work so far has paid off and we can start to look forward to the semi-finals,” said Wardle, who is part of an unchanged 19-man squad for the visit of former coach Tony Smith’s Wolves.

“But no-one here is celebrating at this stage.

“We all know our work this year is far from done. We may have one of the best current records in the competition, with just a couple of defeats over the past three months, but getting carried away is the last thing on our minds.

“We know we still need to get a lot better to convince everyone we can reach the Grand Final for the first time.

“We’re 100% confident we can do that if we play to our full potential. We’ve still got the best defence in the competition and we feel as if our attack has been coming together at just the right time.

“We just need to start stringing those complete performances together, and if we can do that this weekend to beat Warrington and build on that at Hull next Friday and at home to Leeds the following week, then we know we can prove the doubters wrong, win our semi-final and reaching the Grand Final.

“We know as a group we can do it.”
