“Will it rain or won’t it?”

“Those Hinchliffe burgers smell good.”

“Players’ badges at the HGSA tent? Great idea.”

“Joe Wardle – in the stocks – another great idea!”

“And there’s a cricket match as well? Wow!”

Just a few of the quotes heard at the Giants Cricket and Fun Day – in collaboration with the Giants Supporters Association.

You have to feel sorry for poor Joe Wardle. Michael Lawrence ‘volunteered’ for the stocks. So ferocious-looking is Bruno that none of the assembled youngsters dare pick up a wet sponge and throw it at him.

So, enter Joe. “This is easy”, he thinks, “I’ll grow even more in Baloo’s eyes if I volunteer for this.” The queue was a mile long! Even teammate Antonio Kaufusi joined in the act!!

Elsewhere, our MD Richard Thewlis showed just how multi-talented he is.

Once the match began, Richard took up his position at the scoreboard with a scorebook in hand. When an umpire failed to take his position, Richard duly stepped into the breach and walked onto the pitch – with scorebook in hand. The rumour that he missed some of the army’s (opponents) appeals whilst writing the score is pure fantasy!

Those of you who suggest that our players don’t ‘man up’ were proved totally correct. Half-a-dozen of our biggest players took on an equally numbered team of kiddies in a tug-of-war battle. It’s a wonder that the youngsters managed to lift the rope – its diameter was the same as the young, pulling bodies – let alone WIN.

Yes, half-a-dozen (more or less!) young fans took on the might of the Giants and WON. Not once, but twice. Jerry was heard to say “How did we lose that?”!

Another star of the club strutted around continually asking people to take his photo. What was even more amazing was that the people who he asked suggested that their child also be in the picture.

Where does Big G get his charisma from?

As a result of our appeal for help in this column, thanks must be given to the Netherton Community Centre for the use of a marquee. Invaluable due to the stiff breeze throughout the day.

And, by the way, the Giants won, or so I was reliably informed by Richard, scorebook and rubber-ended pencil in hand.

All in all, another tremendously successful event in the Giants’ and HGSA’s calendars.

A late change to our guest in August. Due to illness, Peter Roe has had to withdraw. His place will be taken by Phil Caplan of 40-20 magazine.

Places are running out for our Challenge Cup Final BBQ. Watch the match in a convivial atmosphere for a mere £5 [for food]. Contact Dave Calverley to book your place [07887 878 425, da.calverley@photolens.co.uk].

Meanwhile, the winner of the first prize in our raffle has still to come forward. Time is now pressing, and if the HGSA has not been contacted by next Monday (July 21) there will be a re-draw. The winner has to make arrangements with Angela Powers for their day out.

The winner can claim their prize by contacting bogumila.callaghan@ntlworld.com or phoning 07414270760. Alternatively, Tracey Houghton at the Giants can be contacted.
