Even a good stadium can host a misfortune.

No, it is not the match I’m talking about, it is the power failure – or rather its consequences.

Under what must have been trying circumstances, the club and stadium staff appeared to cope admirably. However, the overriding question to be asked is “Why wasn’t the kick-off delayed in order that the hundreds outside the ground could see it?”.

Who made the decision to kick-off on time, knowing full well there were still a few hundred people waiting to get into the ground through the limited number of turnstiles?

Was it the Giants?

Was it the RFL?

Or was it Sky TV?

Why were some ticket office operatives telling people the kick-off was going to be delayed?

A delay of five minutes would have enabled everyone to see Jodie Broughton score. Neither would such a delay have affected Sky’s scheduling.

Ralph Rimmer, the one-time Giants MD and now the Chief Operating Officer of the RFL, was asked this very question at half-time. All he would say to this, and related questions, was “There were not that many people outside the ground. We were watching the situation.”

Sorry, Ralph, that is not good enough.

If you really had been watching the situation you must have seen there were a few hundred people waiting outside – at both ends of the stadium.

The people outside the ground had followed the Giants all season and paid good money in difficult times to watch their favourites in that important play-off game.

To deny them the right to a full 80 minutes of rugby through no fault of their own was, I repeat, not good enough.

We await a response.
