So, what does a rugby supporter do in the off-season?

Why, watch rugby of course!

This coming Friday at Laund Hill, there is a feast of floodlight Rugby League. Two matches, in fact.

Kicking off at 7.15, Emley Moor Masters take on a Huddersfield Inter-Town Masters team. And then at 8.15, some of our heroes (ex-Fartowners) will play the West Yorkshire Police Masters.

Masters games are growing fast – especially the age of the players! They are for older players who do not want to retire from the game we all love.

Basically there are 4 short colours:

White, worn by players aged 35 to 39 years.

Black 40 to 49 years.

Red 50 to 59 years;

Gold 60+ (with tags).

Players must wear the shorts of their age group - players can choose to play in a short colour of an older age group if they want or need the extra protection. Or they can choose to walk round the pitch with their boots hidden in a plastic bag!

This Friday’s formula is a first in Rugby League, and we in Huddersfield should be proud to have people like Damon Scholes and Tony Johnson who have the foresight to instigate such an entertaining event.

So, spread the word, wrap up warm, and we’ll see you at Laund Hill on Friday evening.

Another initiative which is gaining ground is the idea of flags at Giants home games. Here is a letter I’ve received from the editor of the Fe Fi Fo Fum Fanzine:

“I have been thinking about this for a while and I think HGSA and 4Fs should set up a fund for some flags!

“We could do it as crowd funding so people put money in and as people see them going up around the stadium I think interest will grow.

“I think if we have a way of donating on both the 4Fs webpage and HGSA, and draw up some designs so people know what they will be ‘paying for’.

“I think the stadium lacks claret and gold, and this could really boost the way it looks on game days! What do you think?”

Watch this space!

Finally, another event to get you out of the house is our Reindeer Race Night (Friday, December 12 at Turnbridge WMC). Tickets are selling fast for this experience extraordinaire, so book your place either online or contact Dave Calverley on 07887 878425.
