After the furore caused by the ‘Fartown v Giants’ debate, let me say that what follows are merely matters for thought.

They do not represent the views of anyone, let alone Huddersfield Giants Supporters’ Association.

The question is: ‘Why is there not a game of rugby?’

To the stalwarts of both league and union, a joining of the codes is sheer hypocrisy. However…

Since the introduction of professionalism, rugby union has gradually developed into a faster, free-flowing game. It’s becoming more akin to our beloved sport.

This has been due, in no small measure, to the involvement of rugby league coaches in the 15-a-side code.

Rucks and mauls to the league fan are a total waste of time. They slow the game down to a snail’s pace. Then there is the game of tennis played by the full-backs when they incessantly kick the ball to each other. But at least the scrums are ‘proper scrums’.

The play-the-ball in our game certainly opens up the play, but what happens after the fifth
tackle? Almost every time the ball is kicked deep into the opposition’s half. Predictable? Boring? You choose.

And our scrums. What is the point of them? Is the line-out, when the ball goes into touch, such a bad thing?

Our crowds are decreasing. We have little money. Union, it would appear, has a bottomless pit of cash.

We struggle to get a mention in a national media which falls over backwards to drool over union.

Is it not about time that at least some thought ought to be given to an amalgamation in the future? Otherwise how can we hope to stem the tide of soccer?

Surely such a staunch rugby union club as Huddersfield YMCA has the right idea for the future. It now has teams in both codes.

A sign of things to come?

Just a thought.
