There was another glimpse of how bright the future of Huddersfield Giants could be as a second development side felt the full force of the Super League club’s Academy youngsters.

Three weeks ago, a young Giants Under 19s Academy line-up thrashed the Midlands 80-0 and now they’ve backed that up by thrashing the North East 96-0 at the DRAM Centre!

Obviously, the standard of the opposition falls way short of what head coach Chris Thorman’s side faces against fellow Super League clubs in the regularly Under 19s Academy competition.

But for a Huddersfield side including a good number of 16-year-old first-year Academy players to be so destructive against a North East team of 19-year-olds, who were coached by former Leeds, Hull and Great Britain prop Lee Crooks, certainly bodes well for the future.

Watching Giants head coach Paul Anderson will no doubt have been impressed with a lot of what he saw, including the way young Super League squad men Liam Johnson, Tyler Dickinson and Kruise Leeming went about their business.

But, like Thorman, he’ll have been disappointed by what the opposition had to offer.

“The positives for me were being able to give first years like Jamie Stringer, Harry Woollard and Keiron Reilly the chance to show us what they can do,” said Thorman. “It’s fair to say no-one let us down.

“During the course of a regular season, I don’t have the chance to play some of our youngest lads, so games like this are very useful in terms of their development, even though the opposition wasn’t the strongest.

“It was good to see our youngsters have a go.”

The hosts led 42-0 at half-time, with tries from Woollard, Dickinson, Stringer, Jack Etchells, Jordan Brown (2), Leeming and Izaac Farrell, who also landed five goals.

And after the break Leeming crossed three more times, while Mikey Wood, Reilly, Johnson, Will Carlos and Issac Noi also crossed, with Reilly and Farell sharing three goals each.
