In-form winger Jermaine McGillvary is determined to build on his hat-trick heroics against champions Wigan and help the Giants start their home Super League 2014 campaign in style against Hull KR on Sunday.

McGillvary was in blistering form in the stunning 24-8 opening-night triumph at the DW Stadium a fortnight ago.

It’s a result that has given the popular 25-year-old and his teammates a massive boost in confidence.

But the Huddersfield-born back knows that if the Giants don’t improve on their opening performance, Hull KR have the potential to make this weekend’s fixture difficult.

“You can’t take them lightly,” said McGillvary.

“They’ve got a big forward pack and they gave us a good game when they came to play us in the trial the other week (20-18 on February 2).

“But everyone knows we’ve also got a big pack who now have a number of minutes under their belt.“So, hopefully we’ll put them to the sword and get the win.

“Everyone’s feeling confident after our win at Wigan the other week, but we all still know it was far from perfect.

“The key is to keep improving week by week and, if we do that, then we know we should start our home campaign on a winning note.”

McGillvary’s hat trick against the Warriors has helped him keep his place for Sunday’s test against the Robins, with fellow winger Aaron Murphy expected to remain on the other flank ahead of new signing Jodie Broughton from Salford.

But he knows any dip in form this weekend could prove costly.

"If you think your place is cemented in the team, then you’re mistaken. That’s how it should be,” added McGillvary.

“If you can handle the pressure and you play under pressure then you are going to be a better player, so I’m all for the competition because I believe in my abilities.

“I’m very confident in myself and I can do the job, but I‘ve got to be consistent with it.

“Maybe in the past I haven’t been as consistent as I would have liked, but this extra competition will improve me. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a really good thing.”
