Excited David Hodgson can’t wait to play a cameo role for Hull KR against a Huddersfield Giants club that will always be close to his heart.

The 34-year-old Rovers assistant coach will temporarily come out of retirement for his testimonial game at the KC Lightstream Stadium on Sunday (3pm).

It will be the first time he’ll have played since hanging up his boots at the end of the 2014 season because of a neck injury.

And even though his time on the field isn’t expected to be too long, he couldn’t be happier he’ll be facing the club he served with distinction between 2008 and 2011, when he made 93 appearances, including the 2009 Challenge Cup final defeat to Warrington at Wembley.

“I’m really thankful to both clubs for agreeing to play this game for me, it’s quite humbling,” said Hodgson.

“And temporarily coming out of retirement to play should be an exciting occasion, even though I don’t know how long I’ll be able to play!

“But what makes it even more special is that I’ll be up against the Giants, because I loved my three years there.

“They (Huddersfield) are always up there at the top of the table and it will be a tough test. They’ve got some quality players and some smart half-backs, so it will be a tough game and a chance to see where both teams stand.

“So as well as being a big day, I also know how important it is for the clubs in terms of their preparation for the start of the new Super League season.”

Tickets for the game are £10 adults and £5 concessions, with Giants fans able to pay on the turnstiles and recommended to enter either The Well (standing) or West Stand Seating area for away fans.
