Wakefield could hand two young on-loan forwards their debuts against the Huddersfield Giants this weekend.

And that’s because of the growing injury list to coach James Webster’s pack.

Within hours of confirming the arrival for a month of Salford back-row forward George Griffin, the Wildcats had recruited St Helens prop Jordan Hand for the same length of time.

With Matty Ashurst, Ian Kirke, Lopini Paea, Scott Anderson and Chris Annakin ruled out through injury and several other key forwards believed to be carrying knocks, it seems certain Griffin and Hand will play their first games of the Super League XX season on Sunday.

Their hope will obviously be to help secure the Wildcats their third win from six starts and leapfrog the Giants into the top eight in the process.

Wakefield couldn’t have made a better start to the season, opening their campaign with a dramatic 24-22 round one triumph at Castleford Tigers before securing an impressive 44-24 home victory over Hull KR a week later.

But since then, and with the injuries starting to bite, they’ve lost 58-16 at Widnes, 20-16 at home to unbeaten leaders St Helens and 24-18 away to Salford Red Devils last weekend.

Danny Kirmond is so often the inspiration for Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

Having arrived at the Giants as a winger from Featherstone Rovers almost a decade ago, the 29-year-old’s career has gone from strength to strength.

The decision of former Huddersfield coach Jon Sharp to move him into the second-row proved a masterstroke and he’s now one of the most respected Super League players in his position.

And having also established himself as the Wildcats’ captain, it’s a guarantee his teammates will be looking for him to take the lead against his former club this weekend.

James Webster is acknowledged as having arguably the hardest coaching job in Super League.

Compared to many of their top-flight rivals, Wakefield have very little playing resources at their disposal.

As a result, former Hull KR half-back Webster went into Super League XX knowing he would be facing an uphill battle to secure the Wildcats a top-eight finish.

With Wakefield currently ninth in the table, the Australian knows it’s going to be tough.

But that won’t stop Webster doing everything within his power to prove the doubters wrong.
