Two of the Huddersfield Giants’ most effective performers are doubts for Saturday’s Super League trip to Warrington Wolves.

Winger Jermaine McGillvary is struggling with a slight quad strain and back-row forward Tom Symonds picked up a calf problem during Sunday’s 34-18 home defeat to St Helens.

Both men will be given until Friday to prove their fitness as Huddersfield look to secure a win which would prevent them from finishing bottom of the table at the end of the regular season.

But with the Middle 8s and the fight for Super League survival just around the corner, new Giants chief Rick Stone intends to err on the side of caution.

“These two have been on light duties this week,” revealed Stone, who is hopeful half-back Jamie Ellis will be fit to return after missing the Saints game with a slight shoulder injury.

“We’ll probably need to test them on Friday before making a final decision, but there’s no doubt they’ve been key players for us in recent weeks and it would be good to be able to include them.

“Having said that, if they’re not quite ready we won’t risk them, because the key is making sure we’ve got as strong a squad as possible available for the Middle 8s.

“Those are the games we’ll be judged upon and we know when it comes to these we can’t afford to leave anything to chance.”
