In-form Joe Wardle is happy to continue as a back-row forward – particularly if the Giants keep on picking up the Super 8s victories.

The first-choice Huddersfield centre has spent around half the season playing in the pack.

He’s been forced to make the switch to cover for England second-rower Brett Ferres, who has so far spent 13 games on the sidelines through a two-match suspension and ankle, knee and bicep injuries.

And Wardle has made it clear he’s happy to carry on playing in the forwards until he’s told otherwise.

“I have been happy with the way I’ve been playing,” said last season’s Giants Player of the Year.

“Whether this switch from centre to second row will become a permanent one, I just don’t know.

“At the moment, I just turn up, get told where I’m playing and just get on with it. To be honest, I’m not too bothered where I play – as long as I’m part of the side and we’re winning, I’m happy.

“I am enjoying playing in the pack, because you get to do more work than in the centres.

“But when I’m told to return to the backs I’ll be more than happy to do it.”

Wardle was again one of his side’s top performers in the Giants’ latest Super 8s success at St Helens as Huddersfield moved up to third in the table with four games remaining.

The visitors eventually secured a hard-fought 28-22 Langtree Park triumph, with the decisive try coming in the 68th minute when Wardle’s superb cut-out pass sent Aaron Murphy strolling over.

It was a pass that was of the highest quality and few had witnessed before from the Scotland international before – although the man himself always knew he had it in his locker.

“People might not know this, but I always played half-back as a kid,” he revealed.

“So it was good to know I’ve still got it when it comes to passing!

“Having said that, I think the pass was still more in hope than expectation, and I was just thankful someone was on the end of it.

“It was definitely a good feeling to have helped us score that try, particularly as it helped us get the win.

“We had to really dig deep to get those two points, and I think it showed the character we possess in the whole of the squad.

“When the pressure’s on, we’ve all got each other’s backs and are prepared to do whatever it takes to work for each other and get the win.

“We know these are the sort of qualities you’re going to need to win a Grand Final, and right now we’ve got them in abundance.

“Hopefully, it’ll be a similar story when we’re at home to Castleford next Thursday and we’re able to move another step closer to reaching the semi-finals.”
