GIANTS fans have helped bring St Helens forward Stuart Jones to the McAlpine Stadium.

The 21-year-old has signed for Huddersfield on a one-year loan deal thanks to the club's squadbuilder fund.

The scheme, whereby fans donate cash to pay the wages of a new signing, has not yet raised the full amount of cash to cover his contract.

But with Jones having plenty of Super League options, the Giants had to act quickly to guarantee his signature.

And now the pressure is on to make sure there's no shortfall, which would leave the club having to pick up the pieces and risk taking them over their salary cap limit.

"We're absolutely delighted that the scheme has helped us sign a player of such a high calibre," said Giants marketing manager Richard Thewlis.

"We really can't thank our new director Alan Bamber enough for helping to put the fund's wheels in motion.

"He's worked incredibly hard to make this signing possible, and with his continued efforts and those of the fans by supporting our squadbuilder events I'm sure there will be more than enough cash to cover Stuart's contract."

A player of Jones' quality certainly won't come cheap.

Last season he was a St Helens regular at prop or second row, and is very highly rated by Giants coach and former Saints No2 Jon Sharp.

The new McAlpine boss worked with Jones last season and this link has been central to the move taking place.

Jones shot to fame in 2001 when he led Wigan's Alliance Championship and Grand Final winning teams and made eight senior appearances.

He was forced to leave the Warriors due to salary-cap restrictions - much to the public disgust of skipper Andy Farrell - and has been a Saints' regular since.

Cash problems have again forced a move for Jones, although St Helens are reluctant to make it permanent.
