Josh Johnson has set an example that the rest of the Huddersfield Giants have to follow.

That’s the view of head coach Paul Anderson after hailing the contribution of the 19-year-old prop in Huddersfield’s morale-boosting 31-22 home triumph over reigning Super League champions Wigan.

Johnson was handed a starting spot for the first time in his fledgling top-flight career against the Warriors - it was just his fourth senior appearance of the season – after Anderson had wielded the axe in the wake of the bitterly-disappointing 41-22 defeat at St Helens the week before.

Despite dropping Craig Kopczak, Jason Chan and Anthony Mullally to face the Cherry and Whites, a much-changed Giants side completed a deserved doubel over Wigan following the 22-8 opening-night triumph at the Warriors.

And Anderson feels Johnson deserves to take some of the credit for making that happen.

“One thing you can never, ever question is Josh Johnson’s effort, never,” said former Great Britain prop Anderson.

“You could tell at times that he’d not played for a little while at this level, because he was really huffing and puffing a fair bit.

“But that’s because he never stopped working and did whatever he could to move across the field. He did that pretty well.

“That’s the sort of youthful exuberance I was hoping to see from him on the night, and he didn’t let anyone down.

“That’s the sort of thing I want to see from all my players. In terms of enthusiasm and a willingness to work non-stop, John Johnson’s right up there and definitely set a great example to everyone around him.”
