THE date was Sunday, February 12, 1995, and the competition was the Challenge Cup.

It was the day top-flight Halifax paid a visit to Huddersfield, who at that time were competing in the old Second Division.

Few were predicting a win for the home side, with their opponents expected to be far too strong and quick.

Yet that didn't prevent a crowd of 9,348 turning up at the then McAlpine Stadium to watch what turned out to be an epic fourth-round tie.

At the end of a scintillating 80 minutes, Huddersfield were savouring a thrilling 36-30 derby triumph and a place in the fifth round.

At the heart of the victory was popular Australian Dean Hanger who, along with fellow centre Greg Austin, raced in for two crucial tries each.

There were also scores for winger Ian Thomas and forward Mick Taylor, while Steve Kerry landed six goals.

It was a typical derby battle, with the form book thrown out of the window as the team from the top division met their match.

This Sunday, however, the roles are reversed.

The Super League Giants head to The Shay as red hot favourites to beat their National League I rivals.

A win for Fax would be regarded as a big shock - just as it was 11 years ago when Huddersfield triumphed.

So, the Giants have been warned.

The aim for head coach Jon Sharp and his squad is to make sure history doesn't repeat itself and the underdogs are not allowed to bite back.

Sharp will, therefore, be hoping his players re-produce the sort of form they have shown in the last few Super League encounters.

These fierce neighbouring rivals have not met since Halifax were last in the top flight and Huddersfield gained a double in 2003.

The Giants signed off with a 54-12 away win as Halifax headed for relegation.

Furthermore, with Huddersfield being the last Super League club to be knocked out by a lower division side, losing 18-14 at Hunslet Hawks in 2003, they will be even more desperate to avoid defeat.
