BRANDON COSTIN has been one of Huddersfield Rugby League Club's best players in decades.

He arrived from his native Australia early in 2001 and brought the curtain down on his Giants career by kicking the final goal as his side beat Salford 28-22 in last Sunday's final Super League game of the season.

During that time he firmly established himself as the Giants' greatest player in the Super League era, which began nine years ago.

Many fans will regard last season's two-try display to help the club beat Leeds for the first time in over 30 years as his crowning glory.

But not for the man himself.

As he prepares to jet back home for a new life in Brisbane, Costin would much rather reflect on a home Super League game against London Broncos in his first season at the club.

To many it may appear a fairly insignificant contest.

But in Costin's eyes it was one of the club's most memorable matches, with the Australian making a major impact.

"I came to the Giants at the start of the 2001 season not knowing exactly what to expect," reflected Costin.

"But I was confident we would have enough ability to mount a successful Super League campaign and not end up being relegated.

"Unfortunately, our opening results couldn't have been any worse and we ended up losing the first 16 games.

"Our 17th game was at home to London Broncos and we felt confident this could be the one to kick-start our season.

"But things weren't going too well and with a few minutes remaining we were losing 22-16.

"Then Dave Atkins managed to score in the left-hand corner and I had the chance to tie the game with what was a difficult kick.

"Luckily, I hit the ball perfectly and it sailed straight between the posts.

"It was a great moment. I was happy, the team were happy, the coach and chairman were happy, and the fans were happy.

"With that first League point achieved, we started to improve and in the end were only relegated on the final day of the season.

"Our form in the second-half of the year was great and the wins came at regular intervals.

"So when the team began the NFP campaign, the boys had learned how to win again and that stood them in good stead as the Giants went straight back up. I believe my successful kick was my greatest moment for the club."
