Luke Robinson believes the Huddersfield Giants must build on their excellent Super League XX defensive form and regain their attacking flair in order to secure a strong 2015 top-flight finish, writes James Horsfall.

Following a poor start to the campaign, the Giants registered four consecutive wins to kick-start their season.

However after three successive defeats over the Easter period, coach Paul Anderson’s side slipped to ninth in the Super League table.

And ahead of Sunday’s showdown with French outfit Catalan Dragons at the John Smith’s stadium, the Giants’ vice-captain admits they must regain momentum and push on in order to secure a top four finish come the end of July.

“It’s very rare that one of the best defensive sides – never mind the best – is outside the top eight,” said the 30-year-old hooker. “Generally when your defence is on top you find ways of just winning games but for us that probably shows how under par we have been in attack.

“We have shown glimpses of what we can do – against Warrington we put decent patches together – we’re just not doing it consistently enough. To be the best defensive side and fourth from bottom just shows that we’re not scoring enough points.

“We just don’t have that killer instinct in attack at the moment. It’s that little bit of fluidity and fluency that we need to work on if we want to improve. It’s not that we’re playing bad all the time – we’re just not doing it for long enough periods and putting teams under enough pressure.”

After six defeats and four wins 10 rounds into the campaign, Huddersfield must find some consistency in order to end the season in strongest possible position heading into the play-offs.

And Robinson admits confidence is key to the Giants getting back to winning ways.

“It’s been a bit of an up and down season for us – we started extremely poorly and then found a bit of form and momentum,” he added. “That got taken away over the Easter period. Losing to Hull KR and Salford was disappointing and against Saints we were the better side for the vast majority of the game.

“All you need is a bit of confidence. It’s the same thing in any sport – when things are going your way and you get that bit of momentum behind you things seems to flow and seem to happen for you but you’ve obviously got to win for those things to happen.”

Sunday’s opponents are currently one point and one place above the Giants in 8th and the scrum half believes the two sides’ contrasting styles promises for an entertaining clash as Huddersfield aim to get back to winning ways.

“We’re very similar in league positions at the moment but it’s a total contrast in the way both sides have been going this year,” he explained. “If you look at Catalans, on paper they have one of the best squads in the league and in terms of attack they’re probably one of the best sides.

“From Escare at the back all through their line-up, they have attacking threats. When they have the ball they’re posing a lot of teams a lot of questions and score a lot of points. On the flip side they’re conceding.

“The contrast is that we’re the opposite way – we’re not conceding many points and teams are finding it extremely difficult to score against us, but in the same token we don’t seem to be getting over the line ourselves.

“It’s going to be a case of a good defensive side against a good attacking side, and fingers crossed the defensive side comes out on top.”
