Experienced Matt Diskin has admitted his Bradford Bulls face a tough test to beat the Giants at Magic Weekend.

But that won’t prevent the former Leeds Rhinos Super League Grand Final winner and his teammates from giving it their best shot in Sunday’s West Yorkshire derby clash at the Etihad Stadium.

Everything points towards a Huddersfield win, with the Giants having already thrashed the Bulls 66-12 at Odsal this season.

On top of that, the Giants head to the home of newly-crowned Premier League champions Manchester City having just made it four wins on the trot with a 20-16 triumph at London Broncos, while Bradford lost 50-0 at home to St Helens at the same time.

But even though the Bulls are facing the threat of relegation, highly-respected hooker Diskin knows his side will relish this weekend’s big Super League challenge.

“For us, this game’s a tough one,” said the 32-year-old Bulls captain.

“Huddersfield are a quality side and are starting to put a good run of results together.

“But in our position (the Bulls are joint bottom of the table with zero points after being deducted six points at the start of the season after going into administration) we’ve got to be looking to take points from games wherever those are played.

“I know the Magic Weekend is a big event and we’ll be playing in a fantastic stadium. But, to be honest, it’s irrelevant where we play.

“We come into this game off the back of a bad defeat and know what we need to do.

“it’s no about where we’re playing and who w’re playing, it’s just a case of focusing on ourselves and trying to do the best we can.”

Diskin knows, however, that it’s going to take something special for his side to claim the wins necessary to avoid the drop.

“We have had some good wins recently (most notable 34-28 at home to Warrington Wolves 11 days ago), but we have endured some bad performances as well,” he added.

“But we have a small squad and, because of that, managing any consistency can be quite tough.

“We don’t have the luxury of teams like Huddersfield and others, who can bring in other international players when their squad gets a bit stretched.

“What we do have is a group of players who are prepared to work very hard for one another. No matter who the opposition is, they will always put in 100% effort.

“Admittedly, there are times we can let that overflow and there have been times where there has been a lack of discipline in our performances, and sometimes our lack of composure has been killing us.

“But if we can keep our composure and maintain our level effort I’m sure we will pick points up.

“And we’re certainly not too troubled about what teams around us in the competition are doing.

“In some ways we don’t care, because we can’t do anything about that. What we need to do is start picking up wins on a regular basis, then we will see how that affects where we stand with other teams around us. That’s all we can do.

“This seems to be one of the most open Super League competitions we’ve had, and that does give us hope.

“There are teams picking up wins at places you wouldn’t have expected, so we know all is not lost at this stage.”
