GIANTS duo Brandon Costin and Tony Smith have scooped the Tetley's Super League Monthly Awards for July 2003.

Costin has been named Tetley's Rugby Super League Player of the Month and Smith has been named Tetley's Rugby Super League Coach of the Month.

The judging period for the July awards was Super League rounds 17, 18 , 19 and 20.

The judging was carried out by a panel of broadcasters and journalists who regularly cover the competition.

During this judging period, the Giants recorded historic home victories over Leeds Rhinos (30-24) and Wigan Warriors (32-24), as well as a convincing 30-14 win over Hull FC.

They also lost narrowly to St Helens and had to cope with a midweek re-arranged match at London Broncos.

The Giants scored an average of over 25 points per game.

Costin played in all five Giants fixtures during that period, scoring nine tries and four goals.

This remarkable run included a brace of touchdowns in the wins over Wigan and Leeds.

The former Canberra Raider's try average was 1.8 per game.

Commenting on the awards, Giants spokesman Richard Thewlis said: "Both Tony and Brandon thoroughly deserve these Super League awards.

"They are two people who have worked tirelessly this season to put the Giants on the Tetley's Super League map.

"I'm sure Tony will recognise the support that he's had from his backroom staff and acknowledge their input into what is very much a team effort down here at the McAlpine."

Thewlis added: "Likewise with Brandon, the support and form of his teammates has been of the highest order."

Both winners will receive a specially designed Tetley's Super League trophy, as well as a case of Tetley's Smoothflow.

They will each receive their respective prizes in the near future from Tetley's Brand Manager Robin Chaplin, who was delighted by the Giants' success.

"I would like to congratulate Tony and Brandon on their awards which illustrates how successful Huddersfield's first season back in the Tetley's Super League has been."

News of winning the award will hopefully lift the spirits of Costin, who goes in to hospital for a shoulder operation tomorrow, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.

Meanwhile, Stanley Gene has followed the lead of Smith and Costin by scooping the Opta Super League Player of the Week.

The Papua New Guinean star picked up the award after scoring a hat trick in the 54-12 triumph at Halifax on Friday night.

That has taken Gene's try tally for the season to 10, while it is the second time he has been handed the Opta weekly award.
