Michael Lawrence believes the commitment shown by the Giants to beat in-form Wigan Warriors could hold the key to a new and decisive winning Super League run.

Michael Lawrence was pleased to be back in the Giants line up as the Claret and Gold registered a 31-22 victory over the Wigan Warriors at the John Smith’s Stadium last night.

Paul Anderson’s side made it six wins in seven with victory over the Cherry and Whites, securing the regular season double over Wigan in the process.

Lawrence, who put in an admirable 80 minute shift despite the bruising nature of the contest was delighted with his team’s efforts:

“The commitment from the boys tonight was massive. We spoke all week about how we wanted to match Wigan’s energy and out enthuse them.

“We knew they’d try to come here and bully us but we did that to them. We wanted to be the aggressors rather than give in to their aggression and I think we showed that we did that by winning the battle in the pack.”

Despite trailing 12-0, the Giants looked comfortable throughout, and Lawrence praised the attitude of the lads to hit back with such confidence:

“The belief was massive. We knew if we stuck to our game plan we’d come good and could score points. We got on the scoreboard at the back end of the first half and followed on from there.”

Next up for the Giants are table topping Leeds, and the second-rower admitted the lads cannot wait to face the Rhinos.

“We have a week off with the Cup next week and then get ready to go to Headingley and take on the Rhinos. It’s going to be a tough game against a team full of good players and we’ll have to up it again.”

Coach Steve Hardisty Pleased With Young Giants in 28-18 Defeat

Under 16 Academy Head Coach Steve Hardisty says he is pleased and proud of his young Huddersfield Giants despite losing out in a tight fought contest against Wigan Warriors.

The Claret and Gold opened the scoring with a Billy Hayes Try, converted by Izaac Farrell to take an early 6-0 lead which was extended with a Try from Winger Tyler Stephenson to give the Giants a 10 point advantage. Wigan hit back with a try of their own before an Izaac Farrell penalty gave the Giants a 12-4 lead going into the half time interval.

Wigan started the stronger in the second half, two tries and a penalty saw the Cherry and White youngsters take a 16-12 lead. However, the Giants didn’t lie down and hit back with a try through Captain Matty English. The try was converted once again by Izaac Farrell who had a fine game with the boot to put the Giants two points ahead. However that would be the end of the Giants scoring as Wigan ran in two more converted tries to seal the game with a 28-18 victory.

In defeat Head Coach Steve Hardisty Commented:

“I’m really pleased and really proud of the kids.

“We spoke about energy and intent before the game and the kids were fantastic, they did both themselves and the club really proud and I can’t fault them.”

Next up for the 16’s Academy is a trip to take on the Leeds Rhinos on Saturday 14th June.
