WINNING at Harlequins and taking their place at the top of the Super League must be a very promising sign at the start of the new campaign?
It’s not bad and it is certainly better to be up there than sitting in some other slots, but there is a long way to go in this competition and I think all the teams in the top six at the moment will have similar feelings.
Obviously Wigan and Castleford (who moved to the top of the table on Sunday) have each got a game in hand, but really the top of the table at this stage doesn’t matter as the competition is still sorting itself out.
If we are still sitting there in six to eight weeks time, then I think we can start to feel that we have found some consistency, but at the moment I think a lot of sides are just trying to work each other out.
Obviously it is much better to be near the top than at the bottom, but I don’t think any club will be letting themselves get excited at being at the top, that would be very premature, but still it is good to be up there.
The guys are all really pleased that they have got a reward for their hard work but what we have to do now is keep building on that.
Again the emphasis after the match was on making more of the attack after another very strong defensive display?
The good thing about the performance last week was that we created a lot of chances. It was more through our own bad management at times that we didn’t actually score more points.
There were seven or eight instances where we had done all the hard work – only when it came to the easiest part of finishing off did we let ourselves down.
That was down to either not taking a catch or not ensuring that a pass went to someone who was unmarked or, in one case, simply not putting the ball over the white line rather than short of it.
We also had a couple disallowed by the video ref, but to be fair all those calls seemed to have been correctly ruled on.
But the good thing is that we are creating the chances and if we continue to do that then eventually we are going to get over the line.
We do need to improve on our finishing, but we are not in too bad a situation.
And the defensive side of the equation has looked very healthy from the start?
To be honest our defence has been pretty good for the past two seasons and I would have been very disappointed had we not carried that on and kept our standards up.
While there have been a few changes in personnel, there has not been a big change and the squad has been fairly stable over the past two years.
We have added players and all the boys who have come to the club have done really well at fitting in.
The players all work very hard for each other and if we continue to play like that then we are going to be in a very decent position.
