WIDNES caretaker coach Stuart Spruce will be looking to the club's new half-back partnership to spark a major Super League revival.

The former Great Britain full-back will be in charge of the Vikings for the first time on Sunday against the Giants at the McAlpine Stadium (5.30).

Spruce takes over after the weekend sacking of Neil Kelly in the wake of the heavy 56-8 home defeat at the hands of Wigan.

That was the first match in which stand-off Jules O'Neill had teamed up at half-back with new signing Willie Peters, who had only arrived in England from Australia two days earlier.

And the Vikings' hope is that with a full week together the combination will prove more effective.

"It was a case of being thrown in at the deep end last week, and it was hardly a welcome return to England," said Australian scrum half Peters after the defeat against his former club.

"But we've gone well in training this week and it's a case of transferring the good work onto the park on Sunday. We're looking forward to it."
