New Huddersfield Giants arrival Daniel Smith now has two main hopes for the Super League 2015 season - to see Huddersfield reach their first Super League Grand Final and for Wakefield to retain their top-flight status.

And he believes both are achievable aims.

The 22-year-old prop arrived at Huddersfield from the Wildcats on Monday, with fellow forward Anthony Mullally moving in the opposite direction.

It’s a switch which Smith admits came earlier than expected as a four-year deal was due to be struck for the start of the 2016 campaign.

But while the former Leeds Academy man is disappointed to leave Belle Vue in double-quick time, he can’t wait to get cracking at his new club.

“It’s pretty amazing when you think about it,” said Castleford Lock Lane product Smith, who had a season with South Sydney’s Under 20s before returning home to join Wakefield two years ago.

“Last week I was at the club at the bottom of the table and now I’m at a club that’s in the top four.

“The move to Huddersfield had been on the cards for a bit of time, but going there straight away certainly came a bit out of the blue.

“I have to admit it is a bit of shame to be leaving Wakefield, because they’re such a great club and I’ve got loads of great friends over there.

“But when a club like Huddersfield shows an interest in you, it’s almost impossible to turn it down. Over the past few years, they’ve become one of the top clubs in Super League.

“They’re one of the genuine contenders to reach the Grand Final, and there’s no reason why they can’t do it this season, because there’s quality throughout the squad.

“At the same time, I also hope Wakefield can keep their place in Super League for next season.

“The thought of the Giants reaching the Grand Final and Wakefield staying up through the Middle 8s would be a great way for me to see this season end.

“And given the quality at the Giants and the way Brian (new coach Smith) is working at Wakefield, why not?”

Huddersfield Giants signing Daniel Smith

Smith trained with his new teammates on Monday and is already hoping to get the nod to feature at Catalans Dragons on Saturday as the Giants look to move a step closer to a top-four finish ahead of the final game of the regular season – at home to Wakefield!

“I’d love to be playing this weekend,” added Smith, who has been a virtual Wakefield ever-present this season.

“Going away with the boys would also help me to get to know them all a lot better as well, even though I do already know a few of them.

“I still live in the Castleford area and I’m mates with the Cas lads, Craig Huby, Brett Ferres and Kyle Wood, so I’ve also got my travelling arrangements sorted out, which is another bonus.

“I know some of the other boys, too, and this all makes it easier to settle in.

“But while I might not know all the squad all that well, I do know what a quality squad it is.

“Unfortunately, I witnessed that first hand when I played against them for Wakefield earlier in the season (the Giants won 44-14 at Belle Vue in March when Scott Grix completed the fastest hat trick at the start of a Super League fixture).

“They’ve got a strong pack, dangerous outside backs and a captain in Danny Brough who’s a fantastic all-round player and organises the side superbly.

“So I’m looking forward to being on the same side as them, rather than on the receiving end of what they can do.

“I just hope I get the chance to show what I can do for the Giants as quickly as possible.

“Paul Anderson has obviously seen something in my game that he likes, and it’s now up to me to make sure I repay that faith he’s shown in me.

“He’s made it clear there are certain areas of my game where he thinks I can improve, which is something that excites me.

“As prop forwards go, he’s been one of the very best, so if I’m going to learn off anyone it’ll be off him.

“I’m looking forward to seeing that happen and, hopefully, make sure my career here really takes off.”
