RELIEVED Jamie Simpson is ready to build on his Giants’ Super League debut.

The 24-year-old Australian utility back had his first run in the claret and gold in Sunday’s 50-16 home thrashing of Bradford Bulls.

It was a victory that took the Giants back to the top of the Super League table ahead of tomorrow’s Galpharm clash against champions Wigan Warriors (8.00).

Former South Sydney star Simpson is in line to keep his place on the wing for the big Sky TV showdown.

And having now got his first game in England under his belt, he’s desperate to make a regular starting spot his own.

“Getting that first game out of the way was a bit of a relief, I have to admit,” said Simpson.

“I obviously didn’t know exactly what to expect, because I’m so new to the game over here.

“But it really couldn’t have gone that much better for me.

“Fortunately, the boys around me did a great job, so I had the chance to settle in really comfortably. For a winger, it couldn’t have gone any easier.

“I suppose I’d have liked to have got my hands on the ball a bit more.

“But just being out there on the field, seeing the way the boys play and support them was really valuable, and hopefully it’ll stand me in good stead.

“Although I know I’m going to need to keep improving if I’m to hold on to my spot, I feel a lot better having got that first game under my belt.

“And, hopefully, if I do play against Wigan, I’ll be able to make an even bigger contribution and give the team a bit more.

“But it’s definitely a case of so far, so good.”

Simpson has now been in the country for just over a month.

He admits he has had relatively little trouble settling in the country, and feels that made the playing aspect easier.

“As soon as I stepped into the club, I was made to feel really welcome,” he added.

“That makes everything so much easier, and there’s no question that also made my debut a far more comfortable experience.

“I’ve been really impressed with the quality of the squad here and the quality of Super League as well.

“When I came here I knew it wouldn’t be for a holiday, but to do a lot of hard work. That’s how it’s panning out.”
