New signing Chris Bailey has expressed his disappointment that the Giants are now forced to wait over a fortnight to build on their 24-8 opening-night Super League triumph at champions Wigan Warriors.

The 31-year-old loose-forward backed up a highly-encouraging trial display against Hull KR with an accomplished full debut against the Cherry and Whites as his new club made an immediate 2014 statement of intent.

The Wigan-Huddersfield game was brought forward a week because of the Warriors’ involvement in next week’s World Club Challenge clash against Sydney Roosters in Australia.

But that means the Giants have this weekend off and must wait until the following Sunday at home to Hull KR for the opportunity to build on their win.

“That Wigan win was the perfect way to start the season,” said a delighted Bailey. “To come away with the points after the one trial game and looking a bit under-done was a great effort and something really positive to build on.

“So it’s a bit disappointing we haven’t got a game this weekend to keep our momentum going. The more the Wigan game was going on, the better it was starting to feel.

“I’m sure that process would have continued if we’d been playing again this weekend, but it isn’t to be.

“But I’m confident if won’t take us too long to get back up to speed again when we next play.”

And Bailey is hoping that when the Robins come into town in just under two weeks, the experienced Australian will make an even stronger impact with his new side.

“I’m happy with the way things are progressing,” added the former London Broncos man.

“There’s obviously plenty of work still to do, both individually and collectively, but our combinations are starting to bear fruit, and that’s really encouraging.

“It was good to get off on the right foot at Wigan the other night and, confidence-wise, that win was massive for everyone.”
