Jacob Fairbank is desperate to play for Halifax at Batley next Sunday – for the sake of his future.

The 24-year-old Giants back-row forward was 18th man for his on-loan club’s 18-6 Championship defeat to Leigh Centurions at The Shay yesterday.

It was the first chance for him to feature for his hometown club following his arrival from the John Smith’s Stadium last week.

But with his current Huddersfield Super League contract ending later this year, the former Elland junior knows he needs to be playing on a regular basis to help him secure a new deal.

“I’ve come to Halifax to prove a point,” said Fairbank.

“After what I felt was a great pre-season, I was hoping I’d get the chance to play at the start, but that’s obviously not happened. I’ve not been part of the Giants’ initial plans.

“So I’m looking at this month’s loan at Halifax as a way to change that, although not to feature against a top team like Leigh was tough to take. (Halifax coach) Richard Marshall wanted to keep faith with his players who had trained all year with him for that game.

“But I hope I’ll be playing at Batley next week.

“I’m nearly 25, so I really do need to be playing on a regular basis, and it’s even more important, because this is the final year of my current contract.

“I need to be showing everyone I can do a good job.”
