You have to get the feeling that this weekend’s Super League Magic Weekend can’t help but be the last.

While nothing has been said officially, it is difficult to see how the mid-season spectacle can survive the return of clubs being relegated from the competition.

The concept of adding an extra game to the normal league programme, where by definition it is fair as every club gets to play each other home and away, is certainly a left field one.

Super League have in many ways been fortunate to avoid any real controversy over the seven previous Magic Weekends and that the ‘extra’ points have not truly effected any league outcomes.

We have all heard the claims of St Helens and Wigan fans that it is unfair that their sides fight out a fierce derby for the two points, while their potential Grand Final rivals Warrington and Leeds have been served up arguably less competitive Magic Weekend opponents over the years.

But now relegation is back and who knows whether the eighth Magic Weekend on Sunday may actually decide some club’s fate.

Certainly with the reduction in numbers to 12 next season there would be every chance that the ‘extra points’ which appear by Magic could become a very contentious issue.

So if you are heading to the Etihad Stadium at the weekend – make the most of it.
