TIMING counts for almost everything in rugby league.

And Giants winger Marcus St Hilaire's timing has been spot-on - not only for himself but for the club as a whole.

In a week when the Super League club have been looking to pick up the pieces following last Sunday's shock home defeat to Wakefield, St Hilaire - who is widely known as Junior because he is the younger broither of Giants coach Lee - was on hand to provide the perfect tonic.

The news the 27-year-old has agreed a one-year extension to his current contract was just what the doctor ordered.

As well as being a welcome lift, it gave St Hilaire the golden opportunity to dismiss the Trinity defeat as nothing more than a blip and demonstrate how much faith he has in the current Giants set-up.

Furthermore, securing his future for at least one more season means he can focus 100% on his game and get back to the high standard he set at the start of the year.

That bright start was interupted by an injury suffered during the semi-final defeat to St Helens.

But now he is regaining his full fitness and looking forward to seeing the Giants get back on Super League track.

"The Wakefield defeat was disappointing," said the former Moldgreen junior.

"But there's no way it alters my thinking about the Giants right now.

"It was just one of those days, like many other Super League clubs have experienced this season.

"And it definitely didn't make me question my decision to sign an extension to my contract at all.

"I had no doubts whatsoever about signing.

"I'm really enjoying it under Jon Sharp and his coaching has made me a better player.

"I like his attitude to the game and I think it has suited a lot of us.

"It was just a pity I picked up my injury when I did.

"I was enjoying one of the best starts to a season I've had, so the injury hit me hard.

"It all started in the few weeks leading up to the semi-final against St Helens.

"The Achilles was the initial problem, but that resulted in me pulling a calf muscle during the Saints' game and meant I was stuck on the sidelines for two games.

"But I was back down at London Broncos when we won very comfortably and, unfortunately, I played against Wakefield when things obviously didn't go quite so well.

"However, I did feel I was getting some of my fitness back and hopefully that will be reflected in the next few weeks."

St Hilaire would love to be on hand to score the winning try against Salford City Reds at The Willows tomorrow (3.00).

And he believes the side has what it takes to get straight back on track.

"What really hit us hard about last week was that in Super League things had been going so well," he added.

"All the talk in camp had been `top six, top six', so the defeat was really a bolt out of the blue.

"But I know we have the squad capable of hitting straight back.

"There's no shortage of talent here, that's one of the reasons why I re-signed.

"And I know if anyone can put it right it's Jon Sharp. We've all got great faith in him."
