STARS from Huddersfield Giants have been helping pupils improve their literacy skills.

Twelve players from the rugby league team visited Birkby Junior School to take part in a literacy afternoon with the three Year 5 classes.

The players gave an assembly and were introduced to the Year 5 pupils. They also signed autographs and had photos taken with the children.

Four players then went into each class to work with pupils.

Pupils asked the players pre-prepared questions in order to create profiles of personal details and likes and dislikes. The children then completed similar profiles of their own details.

The pupil and player profiles have been teamed up and teachers will now choose one to feature in the programme at the next Giants game.

Romina Mir, the school's learning mentor, said: "It was a lovely day. It was good for us, because it promoted literacy and got people from the community into the school.

"It was the first time we've had anything like this, but I understand the players do it quite often."
