It was an absolute horror start to the contest as the lethargic Giants found themselves 14-0 down in as many minutes.

The hosts were stronger, sharper and hungrier than the men from West Yorkshire , who looked almost disinterested as the action got under way.

A couple of basic errors in the opening exchanges set a very worrying tone, and it was certainly no surprise when George Griffin crashed over under the posts and past a static visiting defence for the opening try after five minutes

Gareth O’Brien landed the conversion and added his second six minutes later when Mason Caton-Brown finished off in the corner.

The Salford goalkicker quickly followed up with a penalty, and the Giants were all at sea.

Admittedly, they did finally awake from their slumber to have the better of the next 20 minutes, with a Danny Brough 40-20 a highlight.

But despite heaps of pressure on the Red Devils’ line, including three successive sets from Salford drop-outs, Huddersfield never looked like scoring. They just didn’t seem to have a clue.

And even though Weller Hauraki did crash over against the run of play five minute before the break for a third converted score, the Giants had only themselves to blame for being 20-0 down after a shocking opening 40.
