Huddersfield Giants head coach Paul Anderson has made his intentions clear by announcing his side for Friday’s sudden-death home play-off clash against Catalan four days early.

The embarrassed boss declared straight after Thursday’s humiliating 57-4 qualifying play-off defeat at Wigan that he would be naming his side within a couple of days.

He did have the option of then keeping his selection under wraps.

Under Super League rules, clubs have to announce their 19-man squad 48 hours before a game and don’t have to reveal their starting line-up and interchange bench until an hour before kick-off.

But Anderson has already thrown down the gauntlet, both to his opponents and to his players, by showing his hand early in the week.

And he expects his players to respond positively to the challenge.

“I’m more than comfortable naming my side now,” said Anderson. “The players knew straight after the Wigan game what I was planning.

“That obviously involved upsetting a few people by telling them they wouldn’t be playing, but that’s part of my job.

“The team that plays on Friday is full of quality, with internationals throughout. It’s now up them to make the decision to turn up and play.”

The Dragons, meanwhile, have yet to name their side, although they are at full strength after centre Vincent Duport and forward Louis Anderson were both cleared of any wrongdoing during their side’s shock 24-20 play-off win at Leeds.

Both players were penalised for late tackles on Leeds skipper Kevin Sinfield and Rhinos coach Brian McDermott argued that foul play was involved.

However, the match-review panel ruled Duport was making a legitimate attempt to make the tackle and that, although Anderson used an illegal shoulder charge, the penalty was sufficient punishment.

Giants: Murphy; McGillvary, Cudjoe, Wardle, Broughton; Brough, Robinson; Kaufusi, Lunt, Kopczak, Ferres, Ta’ai, Bailey. Subs: Faiumu, Patrick, Crabtree, Mullally.

Castleford coach Daryl Powell has been fined by the RFL for publicly criticising referee James Child.

Powell hit out at the official following his side’s 41-0 defeat by St Helens in last Friday’s qualifying play-off tie at Langtree Park.

“We couldn’t get anything from the referee, who I thought was horrendous, although I say that every time I see him referee,” Powell said, who has revealed his comments had cost him a £500 fine, half of which is suspended.
