Huddersfield Giants’ caretaker coach Andy Kelly has warned fans that the season is anything but over.

Their 20-19 defeat at Hull KR consigned the Giants to the Middle 8s and a battle with the other teams in the bottom four of Super League and the leading four teams from the Championship.

However, gaining victories against St Helens at the John Smith’s Stadium on Sunday and then at Warrington Wolves on Saturday, July 23, will have a big bearing on the fixtures Huddersfield will face in the Middle 8s.

“We need to finish as high as we can so we can get four home games in the Middle 8s,” said Kelly.

Kelly, who is now on duty with the England Academy and has handed over the reins to first team coach Chris Thorman, admitted his side imploded in the second half to squander what had looked like a winning advantage against the Robins.

“We feel it was like an implosion,” Kelly said. “We lost big time.

“We stopped doing what we did in first half and what we’ve been good at in last game and a half.

“We were undone by errors and penalties after getting in a position to win the game.

You can’t fault Rovers who were under the cosh and came out on fire in second half.

“We lost our way, although the players continued to work hard and they are all beat up and disappointed not to have a fighting chance of making the top eight.

“We are beginning to get trust and respect back for each other and if we can keep that going we will be okay for the St Helens game.”
