Larne Patrick will forever be in debt to the Huddersfield Giants.

But that won’t make him any less desperate to mark his home Wigan Warriors Super League debut with a win against Huddersfield tonight.

The 26-year-old Wales World Cup forward is on a season-long loan at the DW Stadium, with Jack Hughes moving in the opposite direction, and has made no secret of his desire to make the move permanent if at all possible.

And he knows that objective will become more realistic with a strong start to his time in the Cherry and White.

“I’ve said before, I’ve gone from a top club to an even better one at Wigan,” he said.

“Six years ago, I couldn’t have dreamed I’d be here, and I can’t thank Huddersfield Giants enough for the part they played in progressing my career.

“But I still want to get one over on them, of course I do.

“I’m still good mates with a lot of their players - Anthony Mullally is going to be one of my groomsmen when I get married this October - but when it’s kick-off, it’s business, and that’s the same for them, too.”

And Patrick admits there’s no room for sentiment, even though the Giants will always be very close to his heart.

“About six years ago, I came back from a spell playing local rugby league in Australia. I signed on for job seeker’s allowance, moved back in with my mum and started looking for jobs,” he reflected.

“I had no qualifications, no idea what I wanted to do. It was a scary time.

“I was searching car garages for sales jobs, anything just to get a start and earn some money.

“That’s when Peter Riding (head of youth at Huddersfield) asked if I had a club, and invited me down.

“It was a blessing, really.

“To be honest, I’ve not really looked back since then.”
