BUSY Giants coach Jon Sharp is promising the fans a few surprises when his side takes to the field for Friday's Super League trial clash against Castleford Tigers at the McAlpine (8.00).

Sharp is expected to announce his line-up in the next 24 hours, with all his pre-season signings in the frame to make their debuts.

But the McAlpine head coach has made it clear that he intends to use Friday night as the chance to try out various combinations in a bid to find a winning Super League formula.

"I've never been a fan of pigeon-holing players and I don't intend to start now," said Sharp.

"I want my squad to be filled with multi-skilled and multi-positional players, who can fill a number of roles on the field.

"And that will be reflected on Friday night.

"It was a formula which proved successful during my time at St Helens and I see no reason to change it at the Giants, particularly as I believe I have the players here capable of carrying it through.

"I'm sure it'll be an interesting night, and I'm hoping to learn a lot about my players.

"Since they returned from last week's training camp they've been jumping through hoops to get a competitive game under their belts."

Two definite absentees are Darren Turner and Jon Grayshon, who are recovering from injury.

Added Sharp: "Darren could play, but he has to receive the all-clear from the specialist following his shoulder operation. It's just a formality.

"And Jon is still a few weeks away with his broken leg."
