GIANTS coach Jon Sharp is looking for victory at Halifax on Sunday to kick-start a successful Challenge Cup campaign.

Huddersfield fell at the first hurdle a year ago when they suffered a 26-22 home defeat to St Helens.

The year before that, however, Sharp's side reached the semi-final of the competition for the first time in 33 years.

And the Giants chief believes his club is now better equipped to embark on an exciting Cup run.

"We all really enjoyed our Cup adventure in 2004," reflected Sharp.

"But in the end it came back to bite us, because we didn't really have the strength in the squad to deal effectively with a run to the semis.

"By the end of that Super League campaign injuries had hit us hard and our challenge lost momentum.

"I would like to think it would be different this time around if we did well in the competition.

"There's no doubt we now have more balance in the squad than we did two years ago, and we would be able to deal with a Cup run far better.

"But, at the same time, it would be asking for trouble if we looked beyond Halifax this weekend. That would be a recipe for disaster."

Sharp is well aware his in-form Super League Giants will start as firm favourites against their National League I neighbours.

While the Giants have rattled up 100 points in their last two top-flight outings to topple Harlequins and Castleford, Halifax have been beaten by Keighley and Rochdale.

But Sharp is reading little into that and does feel they will pose a genuine threat.

"We've seen a couple of their games on video and it's clear we can't afford to take them lightly," he added.

"There's some aggression and skill about them, with a lot of their stuff coming off Dean Lawford.

"He looks in pretty decent form and if he gets his kicking game together he can get you on the back foot and hurt you.

"But it really is all about us this weekend.

"We've got to be as professional as we can to guarantee success."
