GIANTS coach Jon Sharp is closing in on his captain for Super League IX.
The McAlpine chief intends to use the rest of the squad's week at their Army training camp in Ripon to make a final choice for skipper.
Sharp admits he has several candidates, with homegrown trio Darren Fleary, Paul Reilly and Darren Turner believed to be under consideration.
But Sharp will leave his decision until the end of the squad's week away, and as part of a coaching de-briefing session.
"I do have people in mind, but nothing can be confirmed right now," said Sharp.
"I have deliberately used this week to take a closer look at all my players in a confined environment.
"This week should confirm everything I thought, and a choice can be made.
"I've been looking at the way the players interact and which of them commands the respect of all their teammates.
"That's the sort of guy you want as your captain."
Sharp was paying particular attention to the leadership qualities of his players during yesterday's training session with the Army.
At a day spent at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate, the Giants took part in a number of command task exercises designed to test teamwork and leadership skills.
And Sharp admits it proved a very valuable exercise.
"The boys took part in a number of `leaderless' tasks, where it called on them to use their initiative to solve certain problems," he added.
"It was interesting to see which players took on the responsibility in their own individual groups.
"I have to admit I was surprised by some of the boys who took control.
"When the Army briefed us about the exercises, they told us we might be taken aback by which members of the squad come to the fore. They were spot-on.
"I think I learned a great deal more about a lot of the lads during the course of these sessions, and I don't intend to forget it.
"Working with the Army was absolutely fantastic."
Sharp is also now working specifically on the positions he sees members of his squad playing next season.
Part of that process will include the squad numbers for players this season.
"The boys will be asked if they've got any particular preference for a number tonight, and we'll then give it due consideration."
