GIANTS coach Jon Sharp admits his players may have one eye on events at Wakefield this weekend.

Should Huddersfield lose to second-placed Hull in today's Super League clash at the Galpharm Stadium (3.00), a win for Wakefield at home to Widnes tomorrow will guarantee the Wildcats a top-six finish - at the expense of the Giants.

Sharp is hoping the thought of such a negative scenario would inspire his side to a shock victory over Shaun McRae's men.

And it would also raise the stakes significantly for next Friday's meeting between the Wildcats and Giants and the Atlantic Solutions Stadium (8.00).

"Our main priority is obviously doing everything within our power to beat Hull today," said Sharp.

"But clearly the events over at Wakefield tomorrow will have a big bearing on the rest of our season.

"The fact we play Wakefield next Friday night makes their game against Widnes important to us anyway.

"But with the contest being so significant in terms of who finishes in the six adds to the interest value.

"There are a few of us intending to go over there tomorrow to take a first-hand look at what Wakefield have to offer, so we can start to put our own plans in place.

"We obviously have a good idea, and there's no doubt they're playing some great stuff right now."

A win tomorrow for Widnes would guarantee their Super League survival and leave the relegation battle between Castleford and Salford, who the Giants entertain on the final day of the regular season on September 19.
