NEW England boss Tony Smith is predicting Sunday’s Galpharm Stadium clash between his two former clubs could be a Super League classic.

The Australian enjoyed successful spells at Huddersfield Giants and Leeds Rhinos before being named national coach in the middle of last year.

The clubs go head-to-head in the Giants’ opening game of Super League XIII, and Smith will be there to see it.

But although he knows it will be a quality contest between two quality sides, he believes the outcome could be too close to call.

“I can’t wait for this Sunday,” said Smith, who helped establish the Giants as a respected Super League force before twice leading Leeds to Grand Final glory.

“I was delighted to be invited to the game, and I can’t think of a better place to be this weekend.

“As well as being my two former Super League clubs, it’s also a game that should be fantastic to watch.

“While Leeds got off to that winning start against Hull KR last Saturday, Huddersfield’s results in pre-season have been fantastic.

“I know you shouldn’t read too much into them, but they are all indicators in form, and right now Huddersfield look in great shape.

“I’ve been impressed with the quality of players they have signed and I expect them all to make a very telling impact.

“I know Jon (Sharp) and his coaching staff will be determined to build on the excellent work they have done over the past few years, and that Leeds will have to be at their best if they are to take the points.

“This is going to be a superb occasion.”

As well as the Giants-Rhinos contest being a quality show, Smith is also confident Super League XIII will hit new heights.

And he knows that will be vital as England prepare for this autumn’s World Cup.

“Super League is a fantastic product and is getting better all the time,” he added.

“There’s no doubt it will be highly competitive and that the intensity will also be high.

“As we start to prepare for the World Cup, I couldn’t really ask for anything more.”
